PRYCE

Ghyllean I have known this remarkable lady for some fifty years and when I was chosen by her to carry out my duties as Funeral Director, it was done with considerable pride, I was therefore compelled to compile this obituary.

Each of us is important, but this lady was particularly special. She was modest, and avoided the limelight despite her extraordinary judgement and medical abilities coupled with her compassion for the human race.

In her lifetime her achievements were considerable. These she never spoke of. Many know little of her multiple contributions. I take this opportunity to do so with admiration.

Ghyllean was born to John and Jessica Booth-Robinson at their family home, Sussex House, Cambridge - the youngest of three Children. She was Niece to The Earl and Countess of Aylesbury with whom she spent much of her formative years, due to her parents travels overseas.

With her Aunt and Uncle, on the Isle of Jersey, Ghyllean was initially tutored by a Governess until furthering her education at St. Neots School for Girls in Cambridgeshire. For the final two years of her studies she attended Roedean School for Girls in Sussex. It was there she decided to train as a Nurse enrolling at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. She chose to specialise initially in Geriatrics and moved on to Terminal Care and pain control stating there was a void in this strata of nursing which required filling and recognition. On qualifying, she took up a post in London at St. Georges Hospital, Marble Arch.

She ceased this work to marry The Rev. J.R. Jenkins with whom she had three sons, Simon, Andrew and Dominic.

The marriage was not to last and some ten years later, following divorce, rejoined her profession in earnest, rising to Sister and eventually Nursing Officer in Cheshire. Following some years Ghyllean gave her Office up to nurse terminally ill patients as a freelance specialist Nurse. In order to do this she entered St. Christopher's Hospice, London in 1985 for specialist training in the school of the late Dame Cicely Saunders, later to become a personal Friend until her death, some eight years ago.

Duly qualified, Gwyllean began her work in terminal care throughout Shropshire, Cheshire, Clwyd and Staffordshire. This she did for some twenty-five years until her own health challenges prevented her from practising.
