I wanted to thank you all for coming here today.

My name is Ron but first before I say a little about Mum I wanted to thank you all for coming here today. I know some of you have travelled a long way to be here, so thank you. So….Joan was my Mum and also Mother to Barbara my Sister. Many of you knew her well as your Granny, Nan, friend and colleague but whatever the relationship, we all know her as a lady who played many roles. Unusually for Married women of the day with two children, my mum started working full- time as a typist for the Inland Revenue in 1952. Some years later she held the record as the fastest Uk Typist and I remember her fingers bashing away like lightning. After retirement Mum moved to Southport with Dad but not to an easy retirement life as one would think. She became President of the Formby Business and Professional Women’s Club for many years. President and secretary of the Lancashire Women’s Institute. And supported other good causes. My father passed away in 1988 and Mum decided she really wanted to be near her extended family so she then moved here to Shrewsbury. Still carrying on her secretarial and charity work, being active in WI and secretary of the United Reform Church, also a member of the Caledonian society Well, she stayed active and completed crosswords with Dave (he says she was better than him) and played scrabble with Barb well into her nineties. Today her birthday Mum would have been 93. Yes she fought to the end. So much so that two days before Mum passed on Barbara & I were by her side and when she was hardly able to speak, or see properly, she asked for her spectacles. So I passed them to her, she put them on and I said are you going to read Mum. No she said. So I said what do you want them for? “To see better she said.” Stock answer I said. “Ask a Stupid question” she said back to me. That was MUM…Always knew what she wanted. A leader to the end and a really great wonderful woman. Loved by many but especially us! Goodbye Mum. Rest in Peace.
