PAYTON Derek, Dad and Grandad.
God saw you getting tired, a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around you and whispered come with Me.
With tearful eyes we watched you slowly fade away, although we loved you dearly, we would not make you stay.Love, Julie, Gary and Jack.

On behalf of all the lads from Low Hill and its surrounds who played for Derek in the 1970's, I would like to offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends. Many of us have moved away from the area but would have been proud to join you to remember Derek yesterday. He was the soul of our football club, The Golden Lion. He gave so much time, effort and enthusiasm to us young lads and the local game. In return he earned the respect and friendship of everyone who played for him.
For years afterwards, after I had left Wolverhampton for pastures new, the first stop on every trip home was Derek's shop in the Mander Centre where he would welcome me with a smile, a couple of oranges and all of the latest gossip.
We heard the sad news earlier today, too late to make the funeral. However, I know that some of the lads are already talking about getting together in 2017 to honour Derek's memory. He was a lovely man.
