Uncle Kent, R.I.P.

Thomas M. Brett

20 January 2012
Uncle Kent played a very important role in my formative years. In fact, when my dad left Dudley to find work and start a new life in Chicago, it was your mum and dad that stepped up. I have many other fond memories of your dad, and each and every time I found him to be strong and silent...and possessing a smile that could never be extinguished. He will be missed by many, but no one is hurting more than your fine family. I'm keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers. Your cousin, Tom.

Thanks Dad

Why am I an Albion fan? It was 1973/74 when I remember Dad taking me up the Albion although I’d been there many times before. I was 10 or 11 and I have little recollection of the events. He continued to take me several times throughout that season and the following 1974/75 season but I just wasn’t interested. He stopped taking me for the remainder of that season and he went to Oldham for the promotion party on his own. However, he persevered and for my 13th birthday which was October 1976, he bought me in advance a season ticket for the Rainbow Paddock. The first game of the new season was against Liverpool and suddenly I started to feel differently. The buzz of being in The Hawthorns and the noise from the Brummie Road to my right, things had changed for me, I took interest in the game, dad was over the moon, he started taking me away to selected away games and I loved it. We moved into the Woodman Corner when the seats were installed in the Rainbow Paddock and when I was 16 he bought me a season ticket in the Brummie Road so I could be with my mates. He stayed in the Woodman until such time that the ground became all-seater and then he joined me and we sat together. Yesterday, I was there against Cardiff in the FA Cup, his empty seat next to me. It was unbelievably my 893rd consecutive Albion home game without missing a single match, this being the 36th year! The gorgeous women, well paid jobs, fun filled holidays etc. all went by the wayside as Albion remained my first priority So I say thanks to my dad, who has passed away, for persevering with me. I wouldn’t change a thing God Bless and RIP We’ll talk about the Albion again
